The response feels closest to your known True.
Start with something you know: your name.
Before testing a belief, get familiar with how the movement feels.
The Finger Rub Test involves lightly rubbing your finger and thumb together while saying a statement. You pay attention to whether the movement feels different.
For your first attempt, you’ll compare your own name with a name that isn’t yours. All you’re looking for at this stage is a difference you can notice. It can take a little practice.
First, notice the movement on its own

- 1Place the pad of one finger lightly against the pad of your thumb.
- 2Rub them together in a small circle using the same gentle pressure each time.
- 3Before saying anything, notice how the movement feels. This is your starting point, or baseline.
Keep the movement light and comfortable. You’ll use the same pressure as you try the statements below.
Now compare two names
Say your own name
Rub your finger and thumb together while saying:
“My name is [your real name].”
The movement will usually feel much the same as it did before you spoke. Notice what happens for you, without trying to change it.
Say a different name
Keep rubbing with the same light pressure. This time, use a name that isn’t yours:
“My name is [a name that is not yours].”
Does the movement feel different? You might notice more resistance, or a change in how smoothly your fingers move. You don’t need to give it a label yet.
If both names feel the same, give yourself another opportunity to practise later. Don’t press harder to create a difference or assume you’ve done something wrong.
Get familiar with the difference
Try your own name and the other name again, keeping the movement and pressure consistent. Can you recognise the same difference?
In Matrix Codes, the response to your own name becomes your reference for True, and the response to the other name becomes your reference for False. These are the responses you’ll compare with when testing a belief.
If you can’t distinguish them reliably yet, stay with this exercise. There’s no need to move on to a Code or guess at a result.
When you’re ready, try a Matrix Code
A Matrix Code puts a possible belief into a short statement, such as Rest = laziness. The test is used within the method to explore your response to that association.
Choose one statement and say it once while rubbing your finger and thumb together. Compare the movement with the two name responses you’ve practised. You can record one of three results:
The response feels closest to your known False.
The response is mixed, absent or too inconsistent to call.
Choose Not clear whenever you can’t tell. You can return another time; you don’t need to keep testing until an answer appears.
A True response to “Rest = laziness” does not make rest lazy. Use the result to reflect on your own experience and whether that belief feels familiar. The exercise does not establish facts about you or anyone else.
Other ways to test
Finger rub is the recommended beginner method. If it does not give you a usable contrast, establish your own known True and False reference with one alternative.
Sway
Stand safely with soft knees and compare the first small movement with your known True and False. Use a wall or chair for support, and skip this method if standing is not comfortable.
O-ring
Make a gentle finger ring and use the same light opening pressure for your known True and False before testing an unfamiliar statement. Do not turn it into a strength test.
When the answer is not clear
- Every response feels the same: Go back to the movement on its own, then try the two names with the same light pressure. If you still don’t notice a difference, take a break and practise another time.
- The response keeps changing: Use one statement once. If the response is not repeatable, record Not clear.
- You strongly want a particular answer: If you cannot compare the response without pushing for the result you want, stop and return another time.
- You feel tired, rushed or overwhelmed: Pause and return when you can use the same light movement without forcing an answer.
Use the test wisely
Use the Finger Rub Test to explore your own subconscious responses, associations and beliefs.
Do not use it to diagnose illness, determine objective facts, predict the future, read another person’s thoughts or replace medical, legal or financial advice.
The question is: “How does my subconscious currently respond to this statement?”
Save your results in Explorer
You can follow this guide on your own. With a free account, Explorer saves your responses so you can return to a Code, test it again and compare your results.
